One of the steam engines stored in Cheyenne's round house. UP 5511 is a 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" Type Locomotive. It's neighbor to the left in the photo is a operational rotary plow. And the other engine that was in the engine shop yesterday was 838 a "parts" engine for the famous 844 (both 4-8-4 "Northern" Type Locomotives).

Spotted these gourds hanging from an overhead stick while walking around the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden. Was there to take photos of the "Chihuly: The Nature of Glass" exhibit. Well worth the trip. This is just an example of always watching for the unexpected (totally unrelated stuff) when you are on an assignment.

Every year the major fireworks vendors sponsor a 3 night show of fireworks in Lake Havasu. Most of the large show producers come and see and purchase the new products. We were at a friends house up on a hill, so there were a few wires in our view. Used a tripod and Bulb exposure to capture the bursts. The film sprokets are from onOne software.

The Wall (an 80% size) was in Apache Junction for a week. We took the family, including our grand daughters to see it. Fortunately, I don't know anyone on the wall. I was on active duty with the US Army Security Agency during '64~'66. My room mate for a while was just back from a tour in Saigon. He was lucky too, only got shot at once. Our lemon tree is 10 years old now. We were really surprised when we got here in January. The tree had so many lemons! This photo was shot on a foggy morning--the same morning I shot the golf course tree shrouded in fog (check the Archives for January). We've had lemonade, lemon desert bars, etc. The tree still looks loaded with lemons and is now budding for the next crop.

Another beautiful sunset this evening! The winds were creating ripples on the bottom of the clouds. It reminded me of waves or whitecaps on a lake. I used a Multiply layer (at 75%) to intensify the natural colors appearing in the sunset. My own action creates the double frame and lets me select the inside color of the frame from the image. This week's hike was down Walnut Creek. Very high walls and huge, balanced rocks. The water in the stream kept "disappearing." It would then re-appear a few hundred yards further down. Used a modified HDR style on this image.

At WPPI, Canon sponsered a demonstration wedding with 6 of the world's best wedding photographers shooting, demonstrating and discussing their techniques. We had two days of heavy rain--got caught up with the shortage of moisture in January. Hopefully this rain will give us a colorful spring with lots of flowers on the bushes and cactus..The clouds were eye catching, so out came the camera. Mountain Brook Village Hikers went to Freemont Saddle and beyond Jan. 23rd. 2009. On the way Geronimo's Cave was visible. After taking a break at the saddle, the group split and some went to the caves. Yes, Fog on the golf course in AZ. This year the Bougainvilla are really tall. Last year the plant was frost bitten and I had to cut it down to just stems about 8" from the ground.

I entered four prints in the RSVP photo contest this year. Here is one of them. This image has a bit of Photoshop done to it. The background was dropped out and replaced with black, the flowers had a 'sketch' type of treatment to emphasize the lines and shading and a yellow glow was dropped in behind the flowers. An author had some pictures of a local business from way back (my guess is they were taken with a 4x5 press camera). They were actually reproductions of pictures in frames. Last weekend my wife & I went to Aspen Alley (southwest of Saratoga WY). Went to shoot an assisgnment for a H.S. senior. The aspens were still in color and we got lots of good pictures of her for her yearbook, etc. This short distance has the tallest, straightest aspens right on the side of the road. The workmen have all left. The inspector inspected and the C.O. is issued. I'm moving in. Desk in one corner and studio in the rest. With a large storage closet in the corner opposite my desk. Should work out fine.

Cheyenne was on the original trans-continential air mail route. This week three restored air mail bi-planes landed at our air port.  One is the oldest Boeing plane in the sky. And, yes, they were actually carrying mail!

Walked through the Cheyenne Botanical Garden a few days ago. Saw these berries and grabbed a shot. Set the camera on -1 exposure compensation to get the correct exposure on the berries (in the sun) against the dark background.

The electrician was back to install most of the switches, outlets and bulbs today. Will be back after Labor Day to finish that part of the project. Painter is finished. Just need the tile work and final plumbing in the bath room and flooring. Guessing at two more weeks.

The painter is almost done. As soon as he does his touch-up and rehangs the doors, the tile man can start on the bathroom. Then it will just be the electrician for the switchs and final work and the flooring. And we'll be in business.

You never know when it is going to happen. My old Dell (2003 vintage) overheated and died. I did use a USB driven fan cooler pad under it most of the time. But upon disection, the little fan was designed to blow the air through a small 'radiator.' This was plugged up with a thick mat of dust! Would be easy enough to clean. Only one screw on the bottom and the fan lifts out. Then you can see the

The mud and tape has been applied, still needs a sanding and final touches. But the rooms are there now! We are picking carpet, tile, faucets, lights and all the other details. Builder needs to order most of these things soon.

The rooms are taking shape now. The studio is going to be a nice size, and it has a large storage closet inside it. Bath is smaller than Jan wanted, but it's still going to be a nice guest bath/dressing room for the studio. The guest bedroom has two closets, so we can use one for 'off-season' clothes. Hope the mudding & taping start soon.

The framers finished this morning. Swept up and left. The electricans arrived about 4:00 and worked till after 7 P.M. Amazing how much they have done. All the wire is pulled for outlets and switches. Still have to do the 'high' work and low voltage-TV cable and phone. Moving along rapidly.

Monday the contractor and a truck load of lumber arrived at the house. By this evening all the framing has been done. Ready for the heating/sheet metal and electricans. The photo at the left is what it looked like about noon on Monday.

Covered the Garrett Valenzuela Memorial Fund golf tournament in Windsor CO last Saturday. Twenty-six teams played a shotgun start.
